The French-American Foundation and the Florence Gould Foundation are pleased to invite you to participate in the 40th Annual Translation Prize competition. In 2026, a $10,000 prize in fiction and a $10,000 prize in nonfiction will be awarded to translators for excellent translations from French into English published in the U.S. in 2025, and winning books will be promoted to our networks.
We will be accepting submissions through January 12, 2026. Finalists will be named by March, and winners will be named by May.
An overview of the official rules is below. Please visit our website for detailed information pertaining to terms, eligibility and submission guidelines: https://frenchamerican.org/initiatives/translation-prize/
Translations for consideration must have been published in the United States for the first time during the previous calendar year (between January 1 and December 31, 2025). All categories of fiction and nonfiction works are eligible, with the exception of poetry, technical, scientific and reference works, graphic novels, and children's literature.
The nonfiction and fiction prizes will be presented to the 2026 winners at an in-person awards ceremony in New York City in May or June 2026.
Please note: While we ask for electronic excerpts at this stage, finalists (notified in March) will be asked to mail hard copies of books to the jury, located at 5 or 6 addresses in the New York area. PDFs of the books are also acceptable when hard copies are not available, but finalists must also be ready to print and mail them to the jury. It is the responsibility of the submitting party to send these copies to the jury, and those who cannot provide the full books in either printed or PDF form in a timely manner may be removed from consideration.
If you are having trouble uploading your submission or if you have any questions after visiting our website, please contact Lillianne Daniels at ldaniels@frenchamerican.org.
We look forward to reviewing your submission.
